For all of its many variations, Poker is not a complicated game to understand if you focus on the basics: 5-Card Draw. This means playing a 5 card hand where the winning combinations are the harder ones to get. You play with the full pack of 52 cards and card values have the Ace at the top and 2 at the bottom. Card suits are important. The cards are dealt to a group, one at a time untiol everyone holds 5 cards.
Which card hand ranks higher?
Royal Flush - Getting the top sequence within one suit, from Ace to 10, is the hardest combination.
Straight Flush - You can get a sequence that is lower than the top combination, in the same suit and this is called the Straight Flush.
Four of a Kind - One from each of the card suits, with Aces being at the top.
Full House - You combine a set of three (of a kind) followed by two (of a kind).
Flush - As long as you hold all the cards from the same suit, they do not have to follow in sequence.
Straight - Here it is the sequence that is important, not having the same card suit.
Three of a Kind - Clearly, having the same card from different suits.
Two Pairs - Note that the value is important here, so A-A and K-K will beat Q-Q and J-J.
One Pair - You want the closest to A-A
High Card - If nobody has any better hand, then the single highest-value card wins.
Basic Rules
1) Everyone who wants to join a Poker game must first place an equal amount into a central pot. After that, they all get their 5 cards.
2) You sort out your cards to see how closely you get to the top ranking on the first round of cards. You get a good idea of whether to stay in the game or quit.
3) You will make one of these bets:
Open: You say 'Open' when you open the betting process.
Check : You can let somebody else Open, in which case you say 'Check'.
See : To stay in the game, you place the same money in the opt as the other players and say 'See'.
Raise : To push other players out, you will raise your bet while saying 'Raise'. Others then need to decide whether their hand is strong enough for See.
Fold : Should you have a weak hand, you can 'Fold'. You leave the game but lose your initial bet, which stays in the pot.
4) After the first round of betting, each player can exchange up to three cards in the hope of getting a higher scoring hand. 5) The player with the highest-ranking hand wins.
