The Croupier sends a ball spinning around a spinning wheel that has lots of numbered slots in it. Whichever slot the ball drops into, that is the winning number. There are ways of spinning the ball but all in all, it is a game of chance. A Roulette wheel has 36 numbered slots and one slot for Zero. Americans being Americans, they like to go for something extra. In this case it is an extra zero on the wheel - making 38 slots for them against 37 for the Europeans.
Playing Roulette
• Place your marker or tokens on the Roulette table on the number where you believe the ball will land.
• You can keep betting as long as the ball spins and until the croupier says 'No more bets'.
• As soon as the ball lands in a slot, the winning number is know. Losers lose their stake and winnings get the pot.
• Choosing a number close to the winning number also gets you some winnings.
The house advantage If the casino operates a Roulette wheel with one zero, it has a house advantage of 2.7%. Adding a second zero increases their advantage to 5.26%.
'En Prison' rule When the ball lands on the zero and the En Prison (in prison) rule applies, you can reclaim half your bet or leave on the table for a second spin of the wheel.
'La Partage' rule If the casino has the La Partage rule (partition) when the ball meets the zero, all you can do is get back half of your stake.
Roulette payouts Should you go for a 'Straight-Up' bet (betting on the outcome of only one number) you can get 35:1 in payouts. Should the casino declare a House advantage, this will 37:1 in European Roulette and 38:1 in American Roulette.
